New Year Resolutions for the hiker

Now is a good time to do some planning for the year ahead. Whilst the weather isn’t quite as encouraging as it could be, you can spend some time doing some research into new destinations for hiking. You don’t have to travel far, just think about interesting areas that you want to explore. In the UK, there are a lot of long distance trails that you can do. These are listed in a lot of books, but I’d recommend the National Trail Companion as a starting point. This details not only the route, but good places to stay along the way as well as good pubs, cafes, points of interest etc. The routes vary in length from a few miles to a few weeks! If you are new to hiking, pick a shorter distance with lots of interesting things to see along the way. You can then build up to some of the longer ones. There are usually camping options on most trails, but you can also stay in youth hostels, pubs, b&b’s or even posh hotels.
