Snieznik Massif

Trip in Poland ~ Beginner difficulty

 A couple words of introduction…

Tomasz_Sojka_Portret.jpg

For many years I’ve been interested in mountain hiking. I like visiting new places, discovering “untouched” corners, and meeting new people,  their culture, and way of life. In my native region I was responsible for hiking trips in the Holy Cross Mountains (Polish name: Gory Swietokrzyskie) several times. This gave the opportunity to meet many people and experience the beauty of the oldest mountains in Poland. My second hobby is sports. I like running, not professionally, but just for myself. In 2006 I ran the marathon held every year in Wroclaw (Poland)  – a huge sports event which attracts people from all over the world. Doing sports gives me a feeling of flexibility and good physical health. Besides sports and hiking, my biggest passion is photography. I started a year ago by participating in a photography course for beginners. This year I’m taking an advanced course. Photography is a marvelous experience for me. It helps me collect amazing, “frozen” moments of my life and the places I visit. All together it gives me a lot of pleasure and new inspiration. Both in my daily life and while hiking I like to feel comfort and safety. That’s why I am interested in ECCO products and its brand in general. When I became a member of the ECCO Sherpa Team, I knew that a new and exciting adventure was about to begin. Becoming part of the ECCO Sherpa Team was an excellent opportunity for me to work on my personal development and share my hiking experience with other members of the ECCO Sherpa Team community.

The reasons for choosing the Snieznik Massif for a hiking trip

Mapa.jpeg.jpg

  • The Snieznik Massif is located in the southern-eastern section of the Klodzko Basin in the area of Snieznik Scenic Park. This park was established in 1981 and includes the most beautiful fragments of the Sudetes Mountains (Polish name: Sudety).
  • Snieznik Mountain has probably some of the oldest rocks (estimated at 3 billion years old).
  • Humans appeared in the vicinity of Snieznik Mountain between the 13th and 14th century, and the colonization of this area started thereafter.
  • Colonization of this area stopped by the end of the 19th century because agriculture became unprofitable; the Snieznik Massif is therefore believed to contain the wildest natural fragment of the Klodzko Basin.

Evenig_before.jpgIn the evening before the planned hiking trip, I packed all the necessary equipment provided by ECCO: an outdoor jacket, a cap, and shoes. An essential part of my gear was a digital camera. To make sure that everything was ok with my camera, I took a couple of photos…

Start

Tomek_Sojka_Map.jpgAt the beginning of my hiking trip I used the Internet as a helpful tool to find out how to get to my destination.

Based on this information, my trip was divided into four stages:

- by train from Wroclaw to Klodzko

- also by train, from Klodzko to Bystrzyca Klodzka

- by bus from Bystrzyca Klodzka to Miedzygorze

- and on foot from Miedzygorze to Snieznik Mountain (for details, see the map below)

The next day in the train – rested and ready for new adventures.

During the train ride I considered which route from Miedzygorze to Snieznik Mountain would be the best option.  There are three ways to get to the summit of Snieznik:

Blue route – the easiest, but the longest

Red route – moderately difficult

Black route – the shortest, but the most difficult

Taking into consideration the weather conditions reproted by the local radio station, such as the thickness of the snow cover, limited visibility, and local route icing, I decided to approach Snieznik’s summit along the red route.

Along the way

On the final leg of my trip I started in
Miedzygorze, where the route towards the
Snieznik summit begins.

It was the first time when I had the chance to test my new shoes, the ECCO 28444YAK. Every  kilometer that went by showed me that these shoes were irreplaceable on sharp stones while hiking towards the mountain’s summit.

During the hike I admired the beautiful landscapes.
The photos below show only a small fragment that what I saw.

Photos made while hiking – coniferous forest covering the slope of the mountain

In spite of the frost and wind, the trees along my route created something like a safety cover which protected me against the unfriendly weather conditions. The route took me step by step towards Snieznik’s summit.

I decided to visit the same place again during the winter.

This photo was made in summer. It was the first time I came under the spell of Snieznik Scenic Park, its silence and beautiful nature. That time was a lot of fun and an occasion to take some interesting pictures. In this picture you can see me and my friends’ daughter. The kid was really happy, and so were we.

This summer hiking trip convinced me that ECCO 68424 shoes were really good and exceptional compared with those I’d used before.

The orange ECCO jacket perfectly contrasted with the snow and guaranteed warmth and high comfort, particularly in extreme weather conditions.

Tomek_Sojka_SnowWalking.jpg After several hours of walking I reached my destination – the mountain hostel at the top of Snieznik. There was a lot of snow everywhere, and it was quite an obstacle during the walk, but the thought of a warm cup of tea gave me additional power to get to the mountain hostel  as soon as possible.

The photos below show the same mountain hostel  during the summer (on the left: The mountain hostel , called “Na Sniezniku”, in the summer of 2007) and winter (on the right: The same mountain hostel  in the winter of 2007). Now you can imagine what a challenge it was to get to it during the winter.

Standing at my destination, I knew that my effort would be rewarded soon with a hot meal and a hot cup of tea.
