Winter climbing is real fun

Trip in Slovenia ~ Professional difficulty

irena_mrak_night_ascent.jpgThis winter we still don’t have much snow in Slovenia, although the temperature dropped significantly for longer time and therefore the ice falls formed quite well. In order to be ready for longer mountain routes and especially for the Nanga Parbat ascent that I plan this summer, I spend all my free time in the mountains hiking or climbing, sometimes also in the night which is pure enjoyment!
So, in the past few weeks I have done some nice climbs in the area of Tržič where I live. The conditions in the snow and ice gullies were good although sometimes the lack of snow made the ascents way more difficult as they usually are.
All the winter ascents need special preparations: special gear, thorough check of weather forecast and as always the right decision for the route. Hiking and climbing in winter require much more strength and will but the enjoyment is much more complex. At the end of the day you can really appreciate the warmth of home and with the cup of hot tea the new hiking and climbing plans are easy to make…
