From sealevel to 6000 metres.. where to start?
Aukje, Netherlands
Hello all!
Unfortunately, no crazy hiking adventure in the last month… I have been to the Alps, but that was (kite)skiing. And i am leaving for India too, but thats for yoga. Yes, a strange blogentry for a hikerswebsite, isnt it? I AM however thinking about training for Mt. Kilimanjaro in June. Since i wont be able to take long walks or be in a gym for the next 5 weeks, i really wont be able to start specific training for Kili until May. And then i have 4 weeks before i leave for Tanzania!
I’ve been asking around and i heard that the best preparation is, yes, simply walking and general fitness training. Now is walking not really the problem, but i live in the Netherlands, which is, … FLAT. Not a hil in sight!! How am i going to do my uphill and downhill training?? Suggestions, anyone???
Aside from training, i am a little worried about altitude sickness as well. I am honestly not used to any form of height. I’ve been told that i just need to drink obscene amounts of water and eat obscene amounts of food and stay active as much as possible. Aside from that, there are apparently pills you can take at 3000 meters that could possible help you nót to develop altitude sickness and make you recover faster when you do? I havent really looked into this yet….
Much research to be done and lots of walking too!!
