MELEN and SJURVARDEN

Touristmap: Molde 1: 50 000 (UGLAND IT GROUP)

On Whit Monday the sky was blue and we decided to ignore the wind, the low temperature and the fresh snow on the tops. We started off to Melen (768 m) and Sjurvarden (667 m),- two beautiful mountains on the mainland, not far from here. The car trip over Atlanterhavsveien (The Atlantic Ocean Road) is just a bonus, and from our home to the parking place where the path stars, it takes less than half an hour to drive. Reaching the mainland at Vevang we drive towards the west, on the main road to Fræna, about 4 kilometers. There a sign with “Skytebane” and “Fjellvegen” show us the way to the parking place.
There is one climate-zone in the forest where the path starts and another on the top of the mountain,- so don`t forget wind-proof clothing and an extra wool sweater in the rucksack! And if you use walking-sticks: Don`t forget your mittens!
The path from the parking place to Melen, and also the mountain ridge from Melen to Sjurvarden, is dry and hard and easy to walk. The path from Sjurvarden back down to the car is rather wet, boggy and steep. So I always use good waterproof shoes on this trip.
On our hiking-trips we like to admire the wonderful view, look at the flora and fauna (Among other things we saw white anemones, saxifraga and 3 eagles this time!), take pictures, talk, rest, speak with other hikers, eat and relax.
From the car and back we spent 5 hours.
